The final Kaiser of the Goldenbaum Dynasty, Kaiser Erwin Joseph II ruled over the Galactic Empire in name only for nearly two years.
Following the death of Kaiser Friedrich IV, there were three possible heirs to the Imperial Throne: the five-year-old Erwin Joseph, and his two neices. Imperial Prime Minister, Klaus von Lichtenlade, allied with the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet, Rheinhard von Lohengramm, in support of Erwin Joseph. They were successful in their efforts, and Erwin Joseph II was named Kaiser, with Lichtenlade appointed assuming dual duties as Imperial Regent and Premier. Many of the High Nobles correctly believed that Erwin Joseph was a puppet-ruler, and that both Lichtenlade and Lohengramm were intent on usurping power. The High Nobles then rebelled against Kaiser Erwin Joseph II's government, instigating the Imperial Civil War.
At the close of the Imperial Civil War, Rheinhard von Lohengramm sent two fleets, under the commands of Wolfgang Mittermeyer and Oskar von Reuenthal to Odin, where they arrested Lichtenlade. Rheinhard then forced Kaiser Erwin Joseph II to appoint him as regent, giving Rheinhard all of the power of the empire in fact, if not in name. This made Rheinhard the single most powerful man in human history, leaving Erwin Joseph as little more than a convenient symbol of legitimacy.
When Kaiser Erwin Joseph II was seven years old, the Dominion of Phezzan hatched a plot to kidnap Erwin Joseph II. They financed ex-members of the Lippenstadt Rebellion, and sent them to the Imperial capital, Odin, on a mission to free Erwin Joseph II from his "prisonders." At the same time, Phezzan secretly alerted Rheinhard von Lohengramm to the kidnapping plot.
